iPhone 16’s A18 Pro tops Android flagships in benchmarks

Forward-looking: The launch of the iPhone 16 lineup marked the debut of two new chipsets – the A18, which powers the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, and the A18 Pro, which does duty in the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. While the phones will only start shipping later this month, benchmarks for the new SoCs have already surfaced online. iPhone 16’s A18 Pro tops Android flagships in benchmarks

Geekbench results for the iPhone 16 suggest

that the base Apple A18 SoC is a solid upgrade over the A16 Bionic, which powers the iPhone 15. In the single-core test, the A18 scored 3,114, a 24 percent improvement over the 2,518 points managed by the A16 Bionic.

In the multi-core test, the A18 inside the iPhone 16 notched up an impressive 6,666 points, an 8 percent increase from the 6,179 points scored by the A16 Bionic.

The A18 Pro was also benchmarked this week on the same platform. In Geekbench 6.3.0, the A18 Pro posted 3,409 points in the single-core test and 8,492 points in the multi-core test.

For comparison, last year’s A17 Pro scored 2,950 points in the single-core test and 7,279 points in the multi-core benchmark, indicating that the new chip is approximately 15 – 16 percent faster than its predecessor in both tests.

The A18 Pro’s scores are significantly faster

than other flagship mobile SoCs currently on the market such as Google’s Tensor G4 or Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. The Pixel 9 with the Tensor G4 managed only 1,758 points in the single-core test and 4,595 points in the multi-core benchmark, while the Galaxy S24, featuring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, scored 2,235 and 6,922 points in the respective tests.

However, the good news for Android users is that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 appears to be much more competitive with the A18 Pro. In fact, the unannounced Qualcomm chipset seemingly outperformed Apple’s latest SoC in multi-core tests on Geekbench. iPhone 16’s A18 Pro tops Android flagships in benchmarks

According to the listing, the upcoming OnePlus 13 (recorded as OnePlus PJZ110), powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4, scored 3,216 points in the single-core test and 10,051 points in the multi-core benchmark.

The listing suggests that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 is just 5 percent slower than the A18 Pro in single-core performance but delivers 18 percent faster performance in multi-core workloads. That said, Geekbench results can be relatively easy to fake, so they should be taken with caution. Even if they are accurate, these are early synthetic benchmarks, and it remains to be seen how they will translate to real-world performance.
