According to The Information, Apple’s folding device will have a clamshell design, similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip series. This will make it different from Google’s first folding smartphone – the Pixel Fold – that was launched with a Galaxy Z Fold-like design last year. The report doesn’t reveal too many details about the rumored phone but claims that it could have dimensions similar to current iPhones when unfolded.

Earlier this year, the same publication wrote that Apple was developing two folding iPhone prototypes as part of its plans to enter the foldable race in the next few years. The company is now said to have zeroed in on the final design, and it’s reportedly being developed under the codename “V68.” The report adds that Apple has already contacted suppliers in Asia about producing components for the new device.

Taiwanese tech blog DigiTimes seems to confirm the report, adding that Apple has already signed up Samsung Display as a supplier for its foldable debut. It further claims that the company is halting development of the rumored folding iPad due to unspecified problems with the Chinese market.

Apple has been working with a lot of new technology of late, including a new self-healing display that is reportedly able to repair minor damages to the screen without any interaction from the user. The company recently received a patent for the new technology, which will allow folding displays to fix dents and scratches on the screen automatically. It’s not immediately known whether this technology will be ready in time for the company’s first folding iPhone.Apple’s first folding iPhone could have a flip design, tipped to arrive in 2026
