iPhone 17 and 17 Air to feature 120Hz LTPO displays, marking the end of 60Hz screens

In a significant shift, Apple is reportedly preparing to phase out 60Hz displays in its upcoming iPhone 17 series. According to industry insider Ross Young (tweet now deleted), both the standard iPhone 17 and the ultra-thin iPhone 17 Air will feature 120Hz high refresh rate displays. This move marks a major shift as Apple moves its entire iPhone lineup into the high refresh rate era, previously reserved only for Pro models. iPhone 17 and 17 Air to feature 120Hz LTPO displays, marking the end of 60Hz screens

Apple’s Standard iPhones Finally Enter the High Refresh Rate Era with 120Hz Displays
Currently, Apple’s standard models use a 60Hz refresh rate, while only the Pro versions feature the 120Hz ProMotion display with an adaptive refresh rate that can drop as low as 1Hz.

With the iPhone 17 series, both the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Air are expected to feature LTPO OLED panels, which offer variable refresh rates and improved battery life. These panels are reported to be supplied by BOE, a Chinese display manufacturer. iPhone 17 and 17 Air to feature 120Hz LTPO displays, marking the end of 60Hz screens

In addition to the display upgrades, the iPhone 17 series will see a change in its lineup. The Plus model, which has not performed well in terms of sales, will be replaced by the iPhone 17 Air. The Air model is expected to have a starting price similar to the iPhone 15 Plus, around $899, and will emphasize a new, ultra-thin design.

The iPhone 17 Air is not positioned as a flagship model but rather as a stylish option that sits between the standard iPhone 17 and the Pro models. It’s designed for users who prioritize aesthetics without needing the high-end features of the Pro models.

The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, meanwhile, are rumored to receive even further display upgrades, potentially including an under-display Face ID system that would reduce the size of the front camera cutout, similar to high-end Android devices.

The iPhone 17 series is anticipated to launch in late 2025, continuing Apple’s trend of incremental yet noteworthy upgrades across its device lineup.
