These practices are alleged to have stifled competition and harmed other businesses, particularly brick-and-mortar retailers.

The CCI reports, exceeding 1,000 pages each, detail how these exclusive launches “deliberately downplayed” competition and favored select sellers who received subsidized warehousing and marketing benefits. This preferential treatment is seen as a way to manipulate market share and potentially inflate prices for consumers.

The findings are a significant blow to both Amazon and Flipkart, who have been facing increasing scrutiny in India for their dominance in the e-commerce market. This is further compounded by the fact that India’s e-retail sector is booming, projected to reach $160 billion by 2028, according to Bain & Company.
